The RYA provide pre-requisite guidance for many of their practical and navigation courses. This ensures that each student/candidate is at the correct start standard prior to attending any RYA training course with us.
The Pre Course Requirements offered by the RYA, are the Bare Minimum to allow an instructor/trainer to be able to build on any current or previously gained knowledge and experience.
Without meeting these start standards prior, it is possible that a student or candidate may come up short and not fulfil the requirements of the current course they are attending or completing. Where this might be the case, an 'Action Plan' will be provided, offering guidance and suggestions as to where and how an individual can gain the required experience or knowledge of a particular course element. This will require additional time and training on the students part.
By following the guidance given by the RYA and us as a Training provider, you will be better prepared for the course you are attending, which can only increase your chances of success.
Imagine taking a couple of driving lessons or even getting to a standard where you are ready for a driving test, then not driving or even venturing onto the roads for a number of months or years. You'd expect that trying to pass a driving test without any additional training or time spent to gain the required experience, is unlikely to end in success.
If you are unsure of your currency, prior experience or knowledge level, you can refer to the relevant publication for the boating scheme you are undertaking, e.g. the G158 for Motor Cruising & Sail Cruising, the G20 for 'Powerboating'.
We have provided information on each of our specific course pages, giving more detailed guidance. If you require any additional advice, just contact us by email or give us a call via our 'Contact' page.
